There is a 9 mile walk between Witham and Braintree that is signposted in both directions. If you would be interested in walking all or some of this route you can download the full information booklet and map below.
The walk is designed to run between Braintree and Witham railway station to enable you to return to the start via public transport.
The northern part of the walk passes the countryside local to where Ray grew up in Black Notley: the cottage where he was born, the paths he would have used to walk to school in Braintree and the local countryside where he collected many of his specimens. It also passes the place of his birth and Faulkbourne Hall where he lived for a short time.
The walk is the result of a partnership between Essex County Council, Braintree District Council and the John Ray Trust.
